In the acting industry, there are many components that we as actors have to deal with. Whether it is getting used to the spontaneous timetable, being given a script to learn the night before an audition or the constant waiting for the next role or audition to arise. One of the main components that we deal with on an almost daily basis is rejection. Every single actor or everyone in general has experienced rejection and the harsh reality is that it is something that we can’t avoid.
Rejection is a part life and a big part of the acting industry. Many of us, when starting out, find it very difficult to deal with rejection after an acting audition and we all underestimate how often you come across it. In the beginning, your first few rejections almost seem as if they are a test to see whether you really want to be in the acting industry. They make you feel really down hearted and you don’t know how to deal with it. Most the time after your acting auditions you won’t be given any feedback just if you’ve not heard back you have probably not landed the role.
But it’s okay, we have all been through it!
Our Top Tips on how to deal with rejection after your acting auditions:
- Breathe
It’s alway hard being told that you didn’t get the role you auditioned for. Sometimes the best thing to do is to take a step back and breathe. We have all been heart broken by rejection but you have to think about the experience in a positive light and that there is always something to learn from the experience. - Don’t Worry About it
We have to accept that we aren’t always right for a role and that there was a reason that we weren’t chosen. Don’t get yourself down thinking about why you weren’t chosen for the role. You need to remember you were selected for the acting audition, you may have given a fantastic performance but sometimes we just aren’t what casting directors are looking for. Don’t worry – there will always be another chance! - Move on
We can’t spend our life hanging onto the times when we were rejected. You have to move on and learn from the experience. You need to take every positive aspect from the audition you went to and remember that you put yourself in front of someone who has the power to remember you for possible future roles (and they will). What has happened in the past is in the past and you need to move on and keep trying, that is what will make you succeed!
At the end of the day, acting auditions and dealing with rejection is always going to be tough. The main thing we have to remember is that you must always keep going. In this industry, we all have to become a little thick skinned and remember that there is a reason for everything. We have all been in the situation where we have auditioned for a role that we really wanted and being rejected really made us take a step back. We have to accept that rejection is part of the process and it is only something that we can learn from in order to progress as an actor.
