“Jante” Wins Silver Remi Award – Houston International Film Festival
Jante, the graduate short film created by students of The Reel Scene’s Screen Acting Year Course, has won the Silver Remi Award at the Houston International Film Festival 2024. Founded in 1961, WorldFest Houston is the oldest independent film festival in the United States and one of the most respected discovery platforms in world cinema. Its history is marked by early recognition of filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, David Lynch, and Ridley Scott, making this award an extraordinary honour for our emerging actors and creative team.
Our actors trained with us part-time for one year and went on to win against films featuring established and experienced actors on the world stage.
The win marks a major milestone for the students who committed an entire year to intensive professional actor training under the Reel Scene faculty. From script work and on-camera technique to industry-level production experience, the Screen Acting Year Course culminates in the creation of a professional short film that serves as each student’s launchpad into the industry. Jante represents the final point of that journey—bringing together months of craft development, ensemble work, and on-set discipline to create a polished, festival-ready piece of cinema.
Alongside the Silver Remi, Jante was also named a semi-finalist for Best Short Film at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival 2024, a BAFTA- and Oscar-qualifying festival renowned for celebrating innovative new voices. These accolades highlight both the dedication of our students and the strength of the Screen Acting Year Course as a professional pathway for emerging actors. The Reel Scene is proud of every student involved, and we look forward to seeing where their talent takes them next.
The success of Jante is also a testament to the commitment and craft of the cast and crew who brought the film to life. Performances by Charlotte Ferryman, Rianne Martyn, Owen Zeal, Mere Dobui, Michaela Diamondi, Leo Joakim, Paul DiStefano, and Saskia Ryan shaped the film’s tense, character-driven world, while the production team—led by director 41 Blackford, producer Deborah Dunkley, and executive producer Alex Fidelski—guided the project from page to screen with professional precision. Cinematography was helmed by UK DoP Richard Boon, whose distinctive visual style has been seen in projects ranging from Top Boy and The Capture to acclaimed short-form and commercial work; his imagery helped define the atmospheric tone that festival juries responded to. Supported by the work of 1st AD Lucas Young, sound mixer Atom Morton, production designer Cat Percy, and the entire crew, Jante stands as a showcase of emerging talent collaborating at a professional level.
